From the recording The Waiting Game
Honky Tonk/Classic Country - I'm not the first person to quote other songs in their lyrics, but this one really begged to be written. "When anybody asks me how we're getting along, I just sing them a honky tonk song" I think the tempo change on the bridge was Bill's cool idea. Bill Kirchen on electric guitar, Floyd Domino on piano, playing fills and doubling the bass, Warren Hood fiddle, Rick Richards drums and Rich Brotherton on acoustic guitar, bass and tic tac bass for that authentic 50's feel.
Lyrics
HONKY TONK SONG
Louise Kirchen
I NEVER KNEW JUST WHAT TO SAY
UNTIL I HEARD THEM PLAY
ONE ABOUT HOW MARRIED MEN CAUSE GOOD GIRLS TO GO WRONG
IN THE WORDS OF A HONKY TONK SONG
NOW IT’S SO EASY FOR ME
TO DESCRIBE MY MISERY
WHEN ANYBODY ASKS ME HOW WE’RE GETTING ALONG
I JUST SING THEM A HONKY TONK SONG
ONCE A DAY I FALL TO PIECES
I’M WALKING THE FLOOR
A D I V O R C E IS WHAT I’M PRAYING FOR
THEN TODAY I STARTED LOVING YOUR CHEATING HEART AGAIN
IT’S CRYING TIME THE KEY IS IN THE MAILBOX COME ON IN
I NEVER THOUGHT THERE’D COME A TIME
WHEN MY WHOLE LIFE WOULD RHYME
BRIGHT LIGHTS BIG CITY WOMEN WON’T LEAVE MY WORLD ALONE
SO I’LL JUST SING THEM A HONKY TONK SONG
ONCE A DAY I FALL TO PIECES
I’M WALKING THE FLOOR
AND YOU’RE GONNA GO TO FIST CITY
IF I FIND YOU BEHIND CLOSED DOORS
THEN TODAY I STARTED LOVING YOUR CHEATING HEART AGAIN
IT’S CRYING TIME THE KEY IS IN THE MAILBOX COME ON IN
IT’S CRYING TIME THE KEY IS IN THE MAILBOX COME ON IN
